I can’t remember the exact moment when we decided we’d do this thing for real. It was something we discussed while lying in bed after a long day, or on chilly weekend mornings, or when Gareth got the Sunday blues, but one day it was one of those things we’d talked about too much; we’d taken our thoughts too far along the path, so it became something we had to do: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do” (and all that).

The huge sticking point was our cats…but Gareth was so miserable in his job, working long hours, and was so unhappy to be missing out on precious time with his daughter, and the cats’ lives had changed with Maddy coming into the family (Jinny had actually become very accepting, but Mimi always ran a mile whenever Maddy got near her), so I justified doing the unthinkable and set about looking for a new, better home for them.

And once I found that, we put our flat on the rental market.

And in a few quick weeks, the wheels had been set in motion…
